What's the difference between a tinted moisturizer, BB cream, and CC cream?

According to Neil Scibelli, a makeup artist based in New York City, tinted moisturizers tend to have a sheerer tint and texture than BB creams, a.k.a. beauty balms. “Tinted moisturizers typically feature a sheer blend of a hydrating cream with a tint of complexion coverage, and depending on the product, some offer SPF,” he explains. The name of this category simply says it all: they’re just facial moisturizers with a tint.

Meanwhile, CC cream stands for a color-correcting cream containing pigments that neutralize discoloration like dark spots, whereas a tinted moisturizer doesn’t necessarily color-correct. “A CC cream will help address redness, hyperpigmentation (dark spots), sun spots, and uneven skin tone, while also containing moisturizing ingredients and oftentimes SPF,” Scibelli adds. CC cream can also be just that—a cream—whereas tinted moisturizers tend to have a lighter texture.

How to apply tinted moisturizer to mature skin

For the most natural finish, “I like to warm my palms together and press them onto the face a couple of times,” says Gerstein. “This helps melt the product into the skin so that it becomes one with it.” Scibelli adds that you can use your opposite hand as a palette to grab and layer product if you're not sure how much to apply. “If you have areas that may need additional coverage, you can go back in and layer a bit more of your tinted moisturizer onto those areas,” he says. “I like to use a brush with fluffier bristles so there's no streaking and it goes on evenly.”

Drop the dry shampoo, because it’s a temporary fix that can actually cause more oiliness in the long run (it’s a styling product, not a cleansing product, after all). Instead, look for an oily scalp-friendly shampoo that deeply cleanses without stripping your scalp’s natural moisture. Keep an eye out for clarifying or detoxifying formulas with ingredients like salicylic acid, tea tree oil, or apple cider vinegar, which help break down excess oil and product buildup while keeping the scalp balanced.

If you’re also dealing with flakes or itchiness, you’re not alone. “Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis can be common in people with an oily scalp,” says Ruth McTighe, MD, a board-certified dermatologist of Waccamaw Dermatology based in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Shampoos with ingredients like ketoconazole (an antifungal), zinc pyrithione (fights bacteria and yeast), selenium sulfide (reduces scalp flaking), salicylic acid (exfoliates and removes buildup), or coal tar (slows skin cell turnover) can be especially helpful in cases like this, says Dr. McTighe.

And no matter which formula you choose, “aim for one that’s sulfate-free and silicone-free to avoid triggering even more oil production,” adds Dr. Chacon. Silicones are a red flag for many dermatologists we spoke to, as they may accumulate on the scalp over time, similarly to the way styling product particles do."Silicone tends to coat the hair, making it heavy, which counteracts the benefits of the volumizing," says Chicago-based hairstylist Nick Stenson. What's more, "continued use of silicones over time can weigh down the hair," Dr. Zeichner previously told Allure.

Should oily hair types use a conditioner?

According to Dr. Queller, oily hair types absolutely should use a conditioner after shampooing their hair. “Skipping conditioner can actually backfire,” she says. “When the hair shaft is left dry or unprotected, the scalp may compensate by producing more oil, which can worsen the overall greasy appearance.” The key here, says Dr. Queller, is choosing a lightweight, non-comedogenic conditioner and applying it strategically—which we’ll dive into more below.

How do I use a conditioner without a greasy feel afterward?

Instead of lathering it all over your hair haphazardly, Dr. Queller emphasizes that intentional application is key to minimizing any oily feel afterward. “Focus on the mid-lengths and ends rather than the scalp,” she says. “This helps maintain hair health and shine without contributing to excess oil at the roots.”

Additionally, Dr. Queller says to use a light amount of product, look for descriptors like “lightweight,” “volumizing,” or “oil-free,” and to rinse thoroughly, “as residue is a common cause of limp, greasy hair.”

For very oily scalps, Dr. Queller suggests a “reverse wash,” as in, conditioning before shampooing. “This helps hydrate the ends without leaving buildup behind,” she says.

Why is my hair oily?

This question has a nearly-infinite amount of answers, so it’s hard to tell exactly what’s causing your scalp to become oily. That being said, some of the biggest contributors to chronic grease-prone hair include genetics, hormones, stress, and weather. "Some of us naturally produce more oil than others, which can lead to a greasy scalp," Charlotte Birnbaum, MD, a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist, previously told Allure. "If you have both an oily face and scalp, it's likely you are naturally oil-prone."

However, suppose oiliness is a new concern for you. In that case, New Haven, CT-based board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD, says the culprit could be: 1) a switch in your usual hair habits, or 2) developing a condition called seborrheic dermatitis. She says this condition is characterized by "greasy, scaly, dandruff from an overgrowth of a yeast called Malassezia."

In a twist of irony, dry shampoos are another contributor to oily hair. "When dry shampoo particles build up on the scalp over time, they can clog hair follicles, trap oil, and prevent normal skin cell turnover," Nancy Samolitis, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Los Angeles previously shared with Allure. It creates something of a domino effect since Dr. Samolitis explained that "this can lead to overgrowth of bacteria and yeast that normally live on the scalp and cause folliculitis, or the inflammation of hair follicles, and dandruff." Folliculitis can, in turn, lead to red pimples and pustules—sort of like scalp acne.

Can you prevent hair from getting so oily?

You can’t completely stop your scalp from producing oil—a natural and healthy function—but you can manage it so your hair doesn’t get greasy as quickly. “This can also depend on your hair type,” says Dr. McTighe. “If you have fine or straight hair, limiting certain products like oils, conditioners, or serums to the ends can help prevent your scalp from becoming too oily.”

How can I minimize hair oiliness?

First step to success: cleanse with the right shampoo. A traditional liquid shampoo for oily hair can assist with absorbing oil without leaving any residue like a dry shampoo (which, to reiterate, doesn’t actually cleanse), making it one of the best first steps you can take to minimize oiliness.

The best shampoos for oily hair are those that are formulated with clarifying and exfoliating ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, which reduce residue, oil, and build-up on the scalp, says Dr. Birnbaum. For a deeper buildup-busting cleanse, she notes to look for a clarifying shampoo, preferably one formulated with salicylic acid.

You should also adjust your washing frequency. "For an oily scalp, I recommend more frequent shampooing, up to once a day," Dr. Birnbaum said.

All of this really depends on your hair type and texture, though. For example, Dr. Birnbaum explained that those with curly hair might be able to get away with less frequent shampooing—once per week—while folks with finer hair may need to shampoo more often. Everyone is different, so do a test run for a few weeks to see how your hair responds to a new regimen.

But if you've ever watched a makeup tutorial that seems to incorporate 17 brushes, three different concealers, and an insistence on completely shape-shifting your eyebrows and lips, you might wonder if you require an advanced degree in makeup application just to get started. Fortunately, actual makeup artists say that anyone—even complete beginners—can get comfortable with and good at doing their own makeup. And it doesn't take an army of complex products.

"Makeup doesn't have to be complicated to be impactful," says Los Angeles-based makeup artist Mezhgan Hussainy, who reminds us that even professional artists are constantly learning new techniques. "Sometimes the simplest products create the biggest difference, enhancing what's already there and helping you feel like your best self." Rather than overstuffing your makeup bag, she encourages beginners to start with a handful of versatile, easy-to-use products.

That's welcome news considering how many makeup formulas are now designed to help you succeed rather than baffle anyone who's never worked a makeup counter. Skin tints can stand in for heavy foundations, cream blushes melt into skin with your fingertips, and soft eye pencils can be smudged long before you have to commit to a less-than-perfect line.

Makeup artist Jenny Patinkin points out that products like these can make the transition to wearing makeup look and feel much more natural. Jumping straight into full-coverage foundation, shadowy contour, or dramatically winged liquid liner can feel jarring, not to mention discouraging if you're not yet confident with bolder products and dexterity-demanding techniques. “If you're accustomed to only seeing your bare face in the mirror and photos, it'll be a subtle difference versus a shocking, dramatic change in your appearance,” she says.

Marquis Ward, an Atlanta-based makeup artist, agrees. "My biggest piece of advice is to focus on enhancing your natural features rather than trying to completely transform them," he says, recommending that beginners start with products that are buildable, blend easily, and give you room to experiment without punishing every little mistake. Forget fancy tools—for now. Patinkin says your fingers are perfectly capable of applying a skin tint, and the warmth of your hands actually helps melt the product into the skin. Ward notes, too, that creamy pencils can easily be smudged if your line isn't perfect: "The learning process becomes much less intimidating." He and Hussainy recommend the Make Up For Ever Artist Color Pencil, which glides on without tugging and comes in a wide variety of shades.

Patinkin specifically recommends kohl (also known as kajal) pencils—she loves the Jillian Dempsey Khol Eyeliners—because they stay workable long enough to adjust the shape before setting. “Once you master lining with kohl, you can graduate to a gel liner,” she says, which is equally creamy but a little quicker to set.

Forget trying to draw one continuous line from inner corner to outer corner—that's difficult even for professionals. Instead, Hussainy recommends, making tiny dashes along the lash line and connecting them afterward. Ward echoes this advice, explaining that short, connected strokes give you far more control than one sweeping motion.

Patinkin offers another trick: Lightly hold the outer corner of your eye taut and, with a freshly sharpened pencil, work from the outside toward the center before switching directions and finishing from the inner corner outward. Then, use a small liner brush to gently smudge everything together so the individual dashes disappear into one soft, seamless line. “You should feel the base of your lashes moving as you apply your liner,” she says. “That's how you'll know you have the right placement.”

Forget everything you've seen in the movies: “The easiest way for beginners to apply mascara is to hold the wand at the base of the lashes, with your eyes open, and then blink into it,” Patinkin says. “You get used to the feeling of having something close to your eye this way, and it makes your eyes more dominant than your hands.”

Once you feel comfortable doing that, you can start gently pressing the wand into the lashes, wiggle the applicator back and forth a bit to deposit product in between each lash to help define your lash line a little more, and then fluff up over the tips.

Ward calls it the easiest brow product to master because it's essentially multitasking for you. Rather than filling every gap with a pencil, you're enhancing what you already have.

Patinkin says the application is almost impossible to mess up as long as you remove excess product from the wand first. She recommends Maybelline New York Brow Fast Sculpt Mascara, while Ward likes Benefit Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel for its ability to add subtle fullness while still looking natural.

Patinkin also offers an easy placement trick: “Make sure you stay one finger's width away from the bottom of the eyes to avoid getting into fine lines, and try not to apply lower than nostril level as this can make the cheeks appear droopy.”

Does heat-protectant spray actually work?

Both Everette and Michael agree that heat protectants are effective and non-negotiable. It “works by forming a thin, protective barrier over the hair shaft, which helps to reduce direct heat exposure from styling tools like flatirons, curling wands, hot combs, or blow-dryers,” explains Everette. She adds that this barrier distributes heat more evenly to prevent “hot spots” and often contains silicones or proteins that smooth the cuticle and reduce frizz. Michael highlights the risks of skipping it, noting, “If you don’t use a heat protectant, hot tools can strip moisture, weaken the hair’s protein structure, and lead to dryness, breakage, and dullness over time.”

Should I apply heat protectant to wet or dry hair?

Everette advises starting with clean, damp hair, noting, “part into four to six sections and spray or distribute the product evenly from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the roots to prevent greasiness.” She recommends using a wide-tooth comb for even coverage and letting the product dry completely before heat styling to avoid sizzling. For touch-ups, she adds, “Use a lightweight heat protectant formulated specifically for dry application.”

Michael breaks it down by formula, explaining, “For sprays, hold the bottle six to eight inches away and mist evenly on damp or dry hair, making sure to cover from mid-lengths to ends without oversaturating.” He notes that “cream or serum versions should be applied sparingly to damp hair—work a small amount between your palms, then distribute evenly with your hands or a wide-tooth comb. Focus on the ends, since they’re the oldest and most fragile part of the hair.”

Do you let heat protectant dry before styling?

Heat protectants come in a range of textures, from liquid sprays to cream and serums, and for most, “You don't wait for it to dry because they're typically formulated and designed to apply on wet or damp hair just before the blow-dry," says NYC-based hairstylist Cataanda James. She notes that products made for use on already blown-out hair tend to dry faster than those designated for wet application. Plus, those post-dry serums are usually used for straightening or curling irons, whereas most sprays are better for use before any heat; but for curly hair, they can revert blown-out hair if water-based, so it's better to use a post-blow serum for additional heat protection.

Is it bad to put too much heat protectant on hair?

Yes, overdoing heat protectant can backfire. “I am a stickler for lightweight, flowy hair and too much heat protectant can compromise the feel and flow,” James explains. When applied moderately on wet or damp hair, “it absorbs deeper into the strand and allows the round brush or dryer attachment to glide through the strands with ease as the hair dries. Too much, though, just coats the strands, leading to buildup and a weighed-down feel,” says James.

Just barely over five feet tall, Vanessa Hudgens isn't exactly in the typical height range for supermodels. But that doesn't mean she can't borrow from (and stun with) one of their most famous go-to hairstyles of the early '90s—and it adds a couple of inches to her height to boot.

At the HollyShorts Film Festival in Los Angeles on Thursday night, Hudgens stepped onto the red carpet looking as though she'd jumped out of a 1992 Revlon ad. (Look it up, kids.) It's impossible not to enviously home in on her voluminous hair and reflexively envision the bouncy, built-to-last, gravity-defying styles that were so ubiquitous some 35 years ago. Her long, glossy hair was swept dramatically over to one side, with lots of lift at the roots and big, soft waves cascading down to her ribs.

It has all the hallmarks of the bombshell blowouts that were so closely associated with the likes of Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer. It may not be quite as gigantic as some of their (literally) biggest supermodel moments of the era, but the reference is unmistakable and so well-executed.

But it's not just Hudgens's hair that gives the look a nostalgic quality. Her eyes are fully lined, just like I was taught to do when I first started wearing eyeliner in the ‘90s. (It was a time.) And is there anything more ’90s than a slip dress? Her satin, contrast-trim L'Agence pick keeps it simple yet glamorous.

That said, Hudgens made the look decidedly 2026 with her nails, which are topped off with a cat-eye effect—clearly one of her favorite manicure modes considering how often she's seen wearing it in a variety of colors. (We didn't have such a cool nail polish option back in the day!)

A few decades have passed since the supermodel-blowout zenith, but Hudgens has certainly proven that some beauty trends never really go out of style—they just wait for the right person to revive them.

Earlier this month, in the midst of touring her Tropicoqueta album, Colombian superstar Karol G unexpectedly released No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto, which translates to I Don’t Regret Feeling So Much. The title is an almost perfect thesis for the album: moody, raw, and unfiltered. There are melancholic ballads, including “Después de Ti,” her collaboration with Greg Gonzales of the pop band Cigarettes After Sex, alongside more unruly anthems like “Matadora,” or “Killer.”

Fans had reason to suspect something new was coming. Months before the surprise album’s release, Karol began dropping beauty-related hints (unsurprising, as she’s someone known for playing with her hair colors and nails). In January, she posted a carousel on Instagram—including an image of herself wearing rhinestones across her forehead and a baby-blue manicure— captioned: “Unfocused But SparkLYYYY.” It was easy to write it off, as she was in the midst of building the world around her album Tropicoqueta. And in April, at the end of her historic Coachella set, Karol announced she was taking Tropicoqueta on the road. The resulting tour, Viajando Por El Mundo—or Traveling Around the World—seemed poised to continue the same visual language: flowers, fiery colors, and plenty of tropical extravagance.

But there was another clue for both her new album and “sentimental-blue” era. In one of the promotional videos for the tour, Karol opens a suitcase. Sparkles spill out. She looks at them and says, “No, I’m not packing that one yet.” It was a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, but it now feels like a preview of what was coming.

The aesthetic of No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto could hardly be more different from Tropicoqueta. One is fluorescent, maximalist, and celebratory; the other is somber, introspective, and stripped back. On the album cover, Karol appears almost makeup-free and bathed in a cool blue hue—giving the image a nostalgic vibe reminiscent of Britney Spears 2003 album, In The Zone.

For Karol, color has always been part of the storytelling, according to Duván Foronda, her makeup artist of nearly a decade. “She is someone who puts color to everything; for her, a song has a color; for her, a feeling has a color.”

When they were creating Tropicoqueta, that feeling was happiness. “She said, ‘I want an album that’s really tropical, that feels really happy.’ And to her, the color that expressed that was orange,” Foronda recounts. The beauty followed suit. “That album had a really defined aesthetic,” he says. “In terms of the makeup, we did a lot of red lips, brown lip liner, and orange tinted cheeks.”

Now, he’s helping Karol strip things back. Duván, whom Karol affectionately calls “Duvi,” has been part of the process of bringing the singer closer to a more natural version of herself. It’s an interesting evolution for an artist whose beauty identity has always been playful.

Before joining Karol’s world, Foronda followed in the footsteps of his mother, Adriana Pérez, a notable Colombian makeup artist. He assisted her on various jobs until eventually building a career of his own, including working with lingerie brand Leonisa—comparable to Victoria’s Secret— which is one of Colombia’s most recognizable brands. There’s something fitting about Karol entrusting this particular beauty transformation to someone who understands the visual language of Colombian beauty from the inside out.

For this era, though, the inspiration came from somewhere else entirely: Hawaii. During the trip, Foronda noticed Karol gravitating toward blue. “I noticed she started wearing a lot of blue,” he says. Eventually, she told Foronda why. “She told me, ‘I don't know, this new era, which is more mine, more vulnerable, more personal, feels blue.’” Soon, the color began appearing everywhere. “We would go out with her, and she would wear a blue shirt, sometimes a blue purse, or even a blue phone case,” Foronda recalls. But this isn’t an electric cobalt or the kind of neon blue that might have felt at home in the Tropicoqueta universe. It’s softer, airier. “You’ll notice it's not a vibrant blue; it's like a sky-blue,” he says. “It’s calming.”

That sense of calm is starting to make its way onto the stage, too. On her Viajando Por El Mundo tour, which recently stopped in Los Angeles for three sold-out shows with special guests including Becky G and Bruno Mars, the energy of this newer era exists alongside the tropical spectacle that fans have gotten to know.

“In the show, we’re still doing the Tropicoqueta [aesthetic], but we’re starting to add some new touches,” Foronda says. “We’re adding Swarovski crystals in her makeup, adding glitter to her makeup, and we’re also doing darker makeup.” It’s the “moodier” makeup, however, that is the biggest departure for the Colombian singer, says Foronda.

“In this new era, we’ll see her with makeup that’s darker, riskier,” he explains. The deeper, more undone looks are meant to reveal another side of Karol: the rebellious one. The key to this look is a smudgy eyeliner. “It has to be messy; it can’t be glam or perfect, like a perfect line,” says Foronda.

And if that feels like a rejection of the pristine, hyper-polished beauty which has dominated our feeds for years, that’s because it is— at least a little bit. After spending recent years embracing her natural beauty and the soft-focus appeal of “clean girl” makeup, Karol is embracing the mess. More eyeliner. More glitter. More crystals. More drama. The clean girls, it seems, are in fact getting glittery.

Foronda’s inspiration board for this new direction is equally sparkly. “I get a lot of inspiration from Zara Larsson’s makeup artist, Sophia [Sinot],” he says. “I love all the glitter she uses, and the little rhinestones she adds to the eyes. I love all the glitter she adds to her body.” His technique is refreshingly low-tech. “I bought an [eyeshadow] palette, and I mix it with body lotion.” The eyeshadow palette is from a New Zealand-based brand, “Question Beauty” while a new MIM body lotion—Foronda’s makeup brand— inspired by a lyric in Karol’s song “Ivonny Bonita” is expected to launch soon and will be available worldwide.

Of course, underneath all that glitter is skincare. Before a show, skin prep takes priority. Foronda’s secret weapon is a 15-minute Medicube Booster Pro massage that provides temporary rejuvenating effects through LED, microcurrent, sonic vibration, and EMS (electric muscle stimulation), alongside the MIM Hydrating Gel, which contains hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5. Afterward, it’s all about removing what went on. According to Foronda, Karol swears by the MIM Gentle Makeup Remover, particularly when it comes to the layers of mascara required for a stage performance. “For a show, you have to wear a lot of makeup, and that includes heavy mascara,” he says. “And she would always [accidentally] take off all her eyelashes when taking off her makeup.” Now, the remover has become a permanent fixture in Karol’s kit. “She would tell me, ‘There’s no makeup remover like this one.”

It’s a small detail, but it captures the beauty philosophy behind this new chapter: the drama can be taken off. The rhinestones can come off. The glitter can be washed away. What remains underneath is the person Karol has been trying to get closer to all along.
